Old Occupations Description

A Whim or Whimsey was a winding mechanism for carrying men and materials up and down mine shafts. Early versions were driven by manpower, using capstans. This was later supplanted by horsepower and still later, in the 19c by steam power. The man or men employed in this operation were known as Whimseymen. This was a general mining occupation and not confined to any one type of mine.
