At one time, 144 was a shop. I've got a picture of Elsie Hall, aged approx. 10 standing at the front door of what I've been told is the shop. The present window, front, ground floor was the shop window.

When Elsie died, many 'shop' items were found in the house. So George, or more probably Martha was probably a shopkeeper! George was a silk weaver, and there was a complete working loom in the 'garret' above the first floor when it was 'cleared'.

George, Martha & family emigrated to Boston, USA on the ss Kansas of Liverpool, arriving Boston on 27 Feb 1883, but returned after a short time, between August 1883 and October 1885. Their daughter Sarah was buried in Fall River, Mass. On the manifest, George was noted as a labourer. The "Kansas", 3,455 tons, 1882-1906, was owned by the Warren Line of Liverpool.

Also Ada LEEARS, born in Philadelphia, an 11 year old niece of Eliza HALL, née LOVATT, was staying with her in Manchester in 1901 showing that at least one other HALL family member had emigrated to the USA. An Elizabeth HALL, 16 years old, woolen sorter, was on the same passenger List as George & Martha and could have married a LEEARS - she would have been 23 when Ada was born.
