Barend was a carpenter and wainwright in Strijen. He was excused national military service on account of a brother (Hendrik?), who served in his place. He was registered under number 23 in Dordrecht. His description (1803) was as follows: Height 1 el 6 palms 4 thumbs and 8 stripes (!!), approx. 1.68 metre, oval face, high forehead, brown eyes, normal mouth, round chin, light brown hair and eyebrows, no distinguishing marks. The document from the National Militia shows the surname spelt without the final “h” although he signs his name with “gh”.
Around 1847 he moved with his family to Bleiswijk.
Barend married Jacoba VAN GENT, daughter of Cornelis VAN GENT and Alletta KOMANS, on 27 Mar 1830 in Strijen, Zuid Holland. (Jacoba VAN GENT was born on 1 Apr 1809 in Strijen, Zuid Holland 1 2, christened on 23 Apr 1809 in Strijen, Zuid Holland 1 2 and died on 17 Mar 1891 in Bleiswijk, Zuid Holland.)
