John Murray Schutz CULBERTSON Born at "Avena" Albert Road, St Mary Cray, Orpington, Kent. Announced in The Times on Saturday, July 20, 1889. See ref 3 Photo taken by E Davey Lavender, Portrait and Equestrian Studios, Tweedy Buildings, Widmore Road, Bromley, Kent (opposite grand entrance to Bromley Palace). Has Murray Culbertson written on back of card. Shows Murray as a young baby about 18mths to 2yrs old. Born with only one arm, but despite this major handicap managed to gain a place in the 1st X1 cricket team at St Edwards School, Oxford and then became an accomplished big game hunter in Mesopotamia. Alligator bags & suitcases still exist. Paper clippings of J.M.S. show him playing tennis Dated London: Tuesday, June 10, 1919 Lawn tennis with one arm By a curious coincidence two one-armed players, Mr Bignell and Mr Culverson, were drawn together in the first round of the Kent Lawn Tennis Championships Tournament, which opened at Beckenham yesterday. It is believed that he became depressed in later life and may well have thrown himself under a tram in West Malling, Kent to kill himself.
