General Notes:
Barend was born in the parish of Kralingen. He had a high forehead and an imposing moustache. He often travelled to the Near East as representative of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also a keen photographer. In 1999 the University of Leiden purchased (for Nfl 600,000) his album of annotated photographs of Persia/Iran amongst which were pictures of VIPs, landscapes and professions. He also took pictures of a shop called “Teheran Toko” which was opened in Tehran during October 1893 by Albertus Paulus Hermanus Stotz.
The University will provide some copies of Barend's personal details. His description, as given in these, are: blond, blue eyes, normal nose, blond moustache, height 1.85 meter. Protestant.
Barend married Berthe Suzanne VAN DEN BERGHE, daughter of Pierre Ludovic VAN DEN BERGHE and Marie Elizabeth LIDON, in Aug 1914 in Leiden, Holland. (Berthe Suzanne VAN DEN BERGHE was born on 19 Aug 1877 and died on 13 Jul 1921 in Rotterdam, Holland.)
